The Greater St. Louis Parachute Club is the longest continuously operating United States Parachute Association affiliated parachute club in the United States. It was formed in May of 1957 and was originally located at Weis Airport. It later moved to Lobmaster (which was located near the present day Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield). When route 40 was built, Lobmaster was demolished. The GSLPC operated temporarily at Creve Coeur Airport and moved to Greenville, Illinois about 1969. One of the original members of the club was Jack Bergman who was a well known in the skydiving community nationwide. Many of the former members of the GSLPC also have their spots in skydiving history. About 1966 the club purchased its first airplane, which it lost in the Greenville Airport fire in 1975. The club also lost most of its gear, including many parachutes, as the clubhouse was located in the main hanger at the time. The club replaced the lost plane and has operated 2 Cessna 182s since the 1980s. In the 1990s, they replaced one with a Cessna 206 so they could haul 5 jumpers (which accommodated 4-way RW - relative work) and a camera person. This allowed for a GSLPC team to practice for and later compete nationally. The membership of the club has varied in numbers from 4 to almost 20 members at any one time. The club is made up of various levels of experience. We presently have members with anywhere from 100 to 3000 jumps. The high level of some members experience makes it a great place to learn. This has always been true, as the clubs core has always been a highly experienced group of skydivers. The GSLPC is open to non-members for jumping as well as students. The membership of the club is made of USPA rated jumpmasters and instructors who all help teach students. It operates every weekend day of the year (weather permitting) and some holidays till sunset. The members are very hard core and out at the airport praying to the weather gods on days when the weather isnt so promising. Members are from all over the area, some from St. Louis and others living in Illinois. Students are trained from April through October by the static-line method. Most are out for the thrill ride, getting up the courage to make that first jump and be able to say they made a skydive. The lucky ones who enjoy it and have the time and resources to continue - become skydivers. The membership also consists of USPA rated PRO (professional) jumpers who are qualified to do demonstration jumps (Demos). The club performs at local homecomings as well as high profile demonstrations in St. Louis. Jumping into these parties and events calls attention to the celebrations. They have performed at the VP Fair Fourth of July Airshow, the St. Louis County Airshow, the Forest Park Balloon Race, Shriners Circus, Rams home opener, Cardinals baseball games, St. Patricks Day Parade, Wehrenburg Balloon Race, Mizzou Homecoming Football games, high school football games, business grand openings and many others since the 1960s. When not training students or practicing for demos, the members stay active skydiving, mostly to have fun, but also to practice and get better at a sport they enjoy. Skydiving is a unique and exciting sport which is not always easy to master. |
